Protecting the language, frameworks and recognition architecture of Calibre

IOWL's intellectual-property portfolio includes institutional names, Positive Value Leadership™, Calibre-development frameworks, recognition marks, applied concepts, organisational methods and protected expressions developed over time. This register explains what the principal terms mean, how they relate and how they should be used.

Current architecture Recognition marks Applied concepts Retained IP

Define precisely

Protected terms are useful only when their definitions remain sufficiently precise to distinguish one IOWL concept from another.

Use accurately

Names, marks and recognition titles should not be altered or used to imply certification, partnership or authority that has not been granted.

Preserve the portfolio

Some marks remain protected even where IOWL's current public architecture now uses a newer or more precise expression.

An intellectual-property register, not a list of current products

The portfolio contains both current architecture and retained protected expressions. Inclusion protects and defines the IP; it does not by itself mean that every item is a currently available course, service, centre, credential or organisational recognition.

The register therefore separates core architecture, professional recognition, applied concepts, organisational methods and retained IP. That makes it possible to preserve earlier marks without allowing them to obscure the current Calibre architecture. Each protected term also has its own permanent public URL and search-engine metadata so that a person researching or considering a similar term can discover IOWL's prior protected concept and its usage conditions directly.

The ® symbol identifies marks presented by IOWL as registered. The ™ symbol identifies IOWL trademarked or proprietary expressions. Registration and enforceability can vary by mark and jurisdiction; the symbol itself should not be read as a statement that every ™ mark is registered everywhere.

Use and permission

Reference is different from reproduction. Accurate descriptive reference to an IOWL concept is not the same as copying its diagrams, definitions, course content or protected methodology.

Licensing, adaptation, co-branding, incorporation into external products or services, or use that could imply IOWL endorsement should be agreed with IOWL in writing.

This page describes IOWL's institutional position and is not legal advice about trademark law in any particular jurisdiction.

The current Calibre architecture

The most important distinction in the IP portfolio is the relationship between development, assurance, action and recognition.

From Positive Values to recognised Calibre

Current IOWL public architecture can be read as a connected sequence:

Positive Value Leadership™ Provides the values-led developmental framework.
Transformation Reflection and application support movement towards internalisation.
Calibre and Integrous Agency™ Positive Values increasingly influence judgement, conduct and purposeful action.
Calibre Development Triad™ ICF + CCF + PCD provide developmental depth, assurance and continuity.
GICI recognition Eligible assessed professional pathways can lead to professional standing and Calibre Credits™.

Development

PVL, the ICF and PCD explain what is being developed and how that development continues throughout changing circumstances and responsibilities.

Assurance

The CCF protects alignment between purpose, curriculum, learner experience, assessment and the recognition claim.

Agency

Integrous Agency and Agentive Leadership describe how developing Calibre translates into responsible action and leadership.

Recognition

GICI is the sole Calibre Credit awarding authority. Professional recognition is evidence-led and distinct from academic credit or generic CPD.

Protected-term directory

Each term below has a permanent, indexable URL so that search engines can return the specific IOWL definition and protection notice rather than only the general register.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full registered name on first prominent mention where practical.
  • Do not alter the name or use a variation that could imply a separate IOWL entity.
  • Co-branding, merchandising or use in a third-party product, service or endorsement context requires written authorisation.

Definition

Positive Value Leadership™ (PVL) is IOWL's values-led developmental framework. It organises 24 Positive Values through six principle domains - Probity, Potency, Planet, People, Perception and Participation - and supports the movement from values awareness through reflection, application and internalisation towards Calibre and Integrous Agency™.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

PVL provides the developmental spine behind IOWL's Calibre pathways. It is not simply a list of values and is not limited to people holding formal leadership titles.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full phrase Positive Value Leadership™ on first prominent mention; PVL may be used subsequently.
  • Attribute the framework to IOWL when used outside IOWL-owned material.
  • Do not reproduce or adapt the framework, course architecture, definitions or proprietary learning content into third-party products without permission.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The Map is an organising representation of PVL. Its visual structure should be used intact so that the relationship between the domains and Positive Values is not distorted.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full title and ™ symbol on first prominent mention.
  • Use only an authorised IOWL visual version of the Map.
  • Do not remove, relabel, reorder or selectively reproduce parts of the Map in a way that changes its intended meaning.

Usage guidance

  • Use Calibre Development Triad™ for the three-part ICF + CCF + PCD architecture.
  • Do not substitute GICI or an assessment process as one of the three Triad components.
  • Use the authorised Triad visual where a diagram is required.

Definition

The Integrous Leadership Calibre Framework™ (ICF) provides the interdisciplinary foundation informing how IOWL understands and develops Calibre. It draws relevant insight from disciplines concerned with human behaviour, judgement, values, society, institutions, culture and consequences.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The ICF informs the substance of Calibre development. It does not itself award Calibre Credits or replace the CCF.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full title on first prominent mention; ICF may be used subsequently.
  • Present it as an interdisciplinary developmental foundation, not as an external academic accreditation framework.
  • Do not reproduce or adapt the framework into external curricula without permission.

Definition

The Curriculum and Calibre Assurance Framework™ (CCF) is IOWL's assurance architecture for keeping pathway purpose, curriculum, learner experience, assessment and recognition aligned.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The CCF protects the principle that recognition should never outrun the evidence capable of supporting it. It complements external academic or professional quality systems rather than claiming to replace them.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full title on first prominent mention; CCF may be used subsequently.
  • Do not describe the CCF as an external accreditation agency or as inherently superior to established academic quality systems.
  • Written permission is required before embedding the CCF into a third-party assurance or curriculum system.

Descriptive reference with proper attribution is different from adoption or appropriation. Third parties must not present the term as their own branded framework, programme, credential, product, service or proprietary concept, or reproduce or adapt the associated IOWL content, without written authorisation.

Definition

Perpetual Calibre Development™ (PCD) is IOWL's lifelong approach to Calibre development. It is continuous but need-led and contextually driven, supporting development as responsibilities, circumstances and experience change.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

PCD uses foresight before action, insight in the moment and hindsight afterwards. Formal awards are milestones within PCD rather than declarations that Calibre development is complete.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full phrase Perpetual Calibre Development™ on first prominent mention; PCD may be used subsequently.
  • Keep PCD distinct from generic CPD: PCD concerns continuing Calibre development rather than the accumulation of training hours.
  • Do not apply the PCD name to an external programme without IOWL authorisation.

Definition

Integrous Leadership™ describes leadership exercised with Positive Values, integrity, judgement, responsibility and consequence-awareness. It expresses the leadership standard towards which PVL development is directed when a person carries wider influence or stewardship responsibility.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

Integrous Leadership is supported by the broader development of Integrous Agency™ across a workforce or institution.

Usage guidance

  • Use the complete phrase with the ™ symbol on first prominent mention.
  • Do not use it as a generic synonym for ethical leadership when the IOWL concept is not intended.
  • Do not imply IOWL certification, partnership or endorsement without formal authorisation.

Definition

Integrous Agency™ describes the values-governed capacity of an individual to exercise judgement, responsibility and purposeful action in ways aligned with Positive Values. It is relevant whether or not the person holds a formal leadership title.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

PVL provides the developmental framework; Calibre provides the developing human foundation; Integrous Agency describes the translation of that Calibre into responsible action.

Usage guidance

  • Use the full phrase with the ™ symbol on first prominent mention.
  • Do not reduce the concept to generic empowerment, autonomy or assertiveness.
  • Use it in contexts involving values-governed judgement, responsibility and purposeful action.

Definition

Agentive Leadership™ describes deliberate, values-anchored leadership that takes responsibility for shaping outcomes rather than defaulting to passivity, avoidance or unexamined system behaviour.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

Integrous Agency applies broadly; Agentive Leadership applies more specifically where an individual carries wider leadership influence, stewardship or formal responsibility.

Usage guidance

  • Do not substitute the AI-era expression 'agentic leadership' for Agentive Leadership™.
  • Present the concept as technology-agnostic and human-centred.
  • Do not reproduce the IOWL definition in third-party learning or commercial products without permission.

Definition

The IOWL Leadership Stool™ is the three-legged model showing Capability, Competency and Calibre as mutually necessary dimensions of dependable professional and leadership formation.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

Capability is what a person knows; Competency is what a person can do; Calibre is how, why and for whose benefit they use both. The model illustrates why employability and performance are stronger when all three are in balance.

Usage guidance

  • Always retain all three legs: Capability, Competency and Calibre.
  • Do not reverse Capability and Competency: Capability concerns knowledge and understanding; Competency concerns practical ability and performance.
  • Use an authorised IOWL visual when reproducing the Stool.

Definition

The IOWL Character Equation™ expresses the relationship between Calibre, Capability and Competency as a concise conceptual model of complete professional formation.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The Equation and Leadership Stool express the same three-dimensional proposition in different forms. It is a conceptual device, not a literal mathematical, psychometric or scientifically predictive equation.

Usage guidance

  • Identify the three dimensions accurately as Calibre, Capability and Competency.
  • Do not present the equation as a quantitative or predictive scientific formula.
  • Do not incorporate it into external recruitment, education or professional frameworks without authorisation.

C5 Lens™ means Competitiveness through Country & Culturally Contextualised Calibre. It is an IOWL implementation lens used to adapt the application of Calibre development to country systems, culture, constraints, compliance and intended conversion outcomes.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The Positive Values remain constant. C5 contextualises implementation rather than changing the values themselves.

Usage guidance

  • Describe C5 Lens™ as a country and culture contextualisation lens used alongside PVL.
  • Do not imply that C5 changes the Positive Values.
  • Written permission is required before embedding C5 into an external government, institutional or commercial framework.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

Usage guidance

  • Use the full term Calibre Credits™; do not invent abbreviations or derivative credit systems.
  • Do not award, issue or record Calibre Credits outside the GICI-authorised IOWL recognition process.
  • Do not equate Calibre Credits with university academic credit or generic CPD.

Usage guidance

  • Use only for officially issued IOWL professional standing.
  • Do not create derivative titles that imply equivalent IOWL standing.
  • Post-nominals and standing descriptions must match the level formally awarded and remain subject to applicable IOWL rules.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

It is grounded in the Leadership Stool™ proposition that Capability, Competency and Calibre must be brought into balance.

Usage guidance

Definition

Humane Calibre™ describes the human dignity, empathy, integrity and Positive Values that prevent a purely transactional view of people as units of human capital.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The concept asks how Capability and Competency are exercised towards people, not simply what economic value those people can produce.

Usage guidance

Usage guidance

  • Present the Hammer as an IOWL metaphor, not a measurement model.
  • Do not alter its central build-or-damage meaning.
  • External commercial or training use requires authorisation.

Usage guidance

  • Use the term for the IOWL lifelong-development concept.

Definition

The IOWL Calibrated Leadership Map™ is a protected values-centred model for considering leadership Capability, Competency and Calibre together rather than focusing solely on qualifications, skills or prior experience.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The model addresses what IOWL describes as the HR blind spot: the under-examination of Calibre when leadership responsibility is allocated.

Usage guidance

  • Use the authorised IOWL visual and terminology.
  • Do not present the model as a validated psychometric test unless a specific authorised IOWL process expressly supports that claim.
  • Third-party recruitment or development use requires permission.

Definition

The IOWL Calibrated Recruitment Map™ is a protected recruitment concept for considering Capability, Competency and Calibre together when assessing candidates for non-leadership and professional roles.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

It extends the Leadership Stool proposition into recruitment by asking not only what a candidate knows and can do, but how they are likely to exercise responsibility.

Usage guidance

  • Use the authorised IOWL model and wording.
  • Do not describe it as a personality test.

Descriptive reference with proper attribution is different from adoption or appropriation. Third parties must not present the term as their own branded framework, programme, credential, product, service or proprietary concept, or reproduce or adapt the associated IOWL content, without written authorisation.

Definition

The HR Human Capital Paradigm is an IOWL contention expressed through the phrase 'Hiring for Skills, Firing on Values, Failing in Productivity'. It challenges recruitment and development approaches that invest heavily in Capability and Competency while leaving Calibre largely unevidenced.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The contention supports IOWL's argument for considering the three Leadership Stool dimensions together. It is a conceptual proposition and should not be represented as a universal causal law.

Usage guidance

  • Identify it as an IOWL contention or proposition.
  • Do not attach unverified external statistics or quotations to the contention.
  • Where empirical claims are made, support them separately with current and verifiable evidence.

Third parties must not present the term as their own branded framework, programme, credential, product, service or proprietary concept, or reproduce or adapt the associated IOWL content, without written authorisation.

Definition

IOWL Employability Progression™ is IOWL's staged concept for expressing how Calibre development can strengthen an individual's differentiation and relevance to employers beyond a binary employable/not-employed threshold. The progression is Noticeable, Preferable, Valuable and Indispensable. Aspirant Access is associated with Noticeable; Cornerstone with Preferable; Basal and Bedrock with Valuable; and the professionally assessed Foundation, Keystone and Capstone stages with Indispensable.

Relationship to the IOWL architecture

The progression sits alongside the IOWL Leadership Stool™. Capability concerns what a person knows, Competency what they can do, and Calibre how, why and for whose benefit they use both. Universities and other education providers remain central to Capability and Competency development; IOWL adds a distinct Calibre-development and evidence layer. Indispensable expresses the developmental ambition to become a trusted, high-value contributor whom an employer would strongly seek to retain; it is not a guarantee of recruitment, performance, retention or literal irreplaceability.

Usage guidance

  • Use the complete title IOWL Employability Progression™ on first prominent mention.
  • Preserve the sequence Noticeable - Preferable - Valuable - Indispensable and its current relationship to IOWL pathway stages.
  • Do not present the progression as an academic grade, psychometric scale, employment guarantee, prediction of future behaviour or measurement of a person's intrinsic worth.

Important recognition boundaries

The IP register also protects meaning. These distinctions prevent IOWL marks from being used to make a stronger claim than the underlying evidence supports.

Calibre Credits are not academic credits

They are distinct units of assessed Calibre recognition awarded through GICI on eligible professional pathways.

Professional standing is not purchased

Registration or payment provides access to a process. The standing is earned only where the required learning and assessment standards are met.

Recognition is not moral perfection

An IOWL award records that defined standards were met. It does not guarantee a person's future behaviour or remove the need for continuing PCD.

Attribution, reproduction and licensing

Most questions about IOWL IP are resolved by distinguishing ordinary reference from copying, adaptation or commercial incorporation.

Descriptive reference: where you accurately discuss an IOWL concept, identify it by its correct name and attribute it to the Institute of One World Leadership where appropriate.

Reproduction: diagrams, maps, course content, assessment material, definitions, protected methods and branded assets should not be copied or redistributed beyond an authorised context without permission.

Adaptation or integration: embedding an IOWL framework into a university curriculum, employer model, government toolkit, consultancy product, software platform or commercial service requires an appropriate written agreement.

Need permission?

Describe the mark, framework or asset you want to use, the intended audience, where it will appear, whether it will be altered, and whether the use is commercial, educational or institutional.

That information allows IOWL to distinguish straightforward attribution from licensing, co-branding or protected-method use.

Protect the terminology

Precise definitions help keep the IOWL Calibre architecture coherent and distinguish it from generic uses of similar words.

Protect the evidence claim

Recognition names are protected partly so that third parties cannot create lookalike awards or imply IOWL authority.

Protect future development

Retaining earlier IP gives IOWL freedom to evolve its architecture without surrendering protected concepts developed along the way.

Understand the architecture before using the terminology
